The Tapestry of Delights

I bought this fabulous Indian tapestry skirt last year but I haven't worn it until today.
Vintage 60s Indian tapestry wrap maxi skirt, 80s belt, 90s floral lace leotard, African necklace, 70s velvet artists beret & gloves
The pattern is absolutely stunning and when I freed the skirt from the back of my wardrobe this morning it made me think the Sri Mahamariamman Temple in Kuala Lumpur...
Such a magical place, we sat there for ages just gazing up at the ceiling.
I've decided to call this skirt my 'temple skirt' cause I think it's rather magical too.
Other news today ;)
Leslie was kind enough to offer me a spot at next Saturday's market at 'The Oxford' in Kentish Town so I'll be there selling an array of fabulous vintage attire.
I will do a sneak-peek preview on Thursday, so that you can see what I'll be bringing with me on the day :)
The March edition of  The Dandy Lion Market is dedicated to women, girls and mothers.
The event is a get together with Oxfam to celebrate International Women's Day and to help raise funds to support women living in poverty around the world.
Sellers will contribute with a percentage of their takings and there will also be a very special tombola and I will be donating something awesome to that too ;)
Before I sign off can I just say that I've really enjoyed all the comments that you wonderful peeps have been leaving, it is really exciting to read your stories and personal takes on the questions I pose.
Thank you for taking the time, it really means a lot to me :)

Vintage jumble sneaky peek

The past few days I have been very busy preparing for Saturday's vintage jumble at The Boogaloo.
We don't have a car so it's a case of whatever we can cart, can come!
This amounts to about a rails worth of frocks, a bag of miscellaneous clobber, a suitcase of handbags and knick-knacks and a box of boots and hats.
It should be enough for the virgin run, I'll be taking notes for future reference.
My clothing rail is one of those cheap ones from Argos that falls over when you hang anything on it unless you've got it tied to the wall; needless to say this felt a little disconcerting.
I've had daymare visions of my rail tumbling over and smashing up someones stall,  a floor covered in a holy mess of vintage frockery, broken teacups and cupcakes and me getting an almighty kicking from an angry fellow jumbler in a pristine vintage frock and victory rolls.
I was considering going out and investing in a sturdier rail but then hubby came up with a brilliant idea.
Up in the loft we had two mic stands and they are now acting as the base of my el cheapo rail & it is steady as a rock, fingers crossed it stays like that...
I still have to price-tag  all my stock, that's what I'll be doing tomorrow.
The prices will range from £3-£20 and I'm also planning a £1 bonkers bargain box too.
Here's a sneaky peek of some the stuff we'll be bringing on Saturday...
 Some close-ups...
If you see anything you fancy why not pop along and see me on Saturday, have a good old rummage and come away with some fabulous bargains...
This was today's ensemble:
Vintage 40s floral print silk dress, mesh underskirt, cropped lurex jumper (AGAIN!), crushed velvet booties & tights.
Goose update: I'm very pleased to say that our feathered friend (now known as Lilo) has returned and seems to be a whole lot perkier.
Cue the happy music :)
Have a wonderful Friday peeps!

Roots & dust rats

Over the past few days the weather has become wonderfully mild and today it was decidedly spring like.
Mark and I went for a long stroll along the nature trail via the pond.
My goose friend was nowhere to be seen, so she has either been picked up by the RSPCA or she was just hiding from us.
This area is riddled with city foxes that could quite easily make a meal out of a flightless goose, so I'm really hoping nothing bad has happened to her.
I've started preparing for next Saturday's vintage jumble, so far I've only got to the picking out what to bring stage and I've still got heaps to do but I'm really looking forward to hopefully spreading a little bit of vintage joy to the punters :)
Vintage 80s jacket, Warehouse tweed shorts, mesh tank, 90s leotard, lurex cropped jumper, Indian wrap, layered tights, Steve Madden boots & knitted bobble hat
I've been meaning to dye my hair since we got back from holiday in January.
The mousy brown regrowth is evident and there's a good peppering of grey hairs coming through now.
Every time I go to put henna in my hair, I think...
"I really can't be arsed with this now" and end up not doing it.
I'm still very much in my winter lull, where 'mañana mañana' becomes my mantra.
However being sick for a few days also fairly knocked the wind out of my sails.
Hopefully this spell of mild weather will make me feel a bit more motivated to keep up appearances and perhaps even do a bit of urgently needed house cleaning.
Have a fantastic Sunday!

Pulling a swinging sickie

In all honesty I should be lying in my bed right now with Gino the giraffe, my hot water bottle.
I woke up yesterday with an extremely debilitating dose of the vileness...
cold as death, woolly headed, sneezy, wheezy and generally frigging sore all over, not to mention looking like a festering meat-bag.
I knew as soon as I got out of bed that I'd be absolutely no use to anybody, so the only sensible thing to do was to neck some night nurse & return to bed.
I'm still feeling pretty rancid today but we managed a quick walk up to the pond to feed the birds.
I thought that as I'd made the elephantine effort to peel myself off the bed, I'd try and cheer up my chops with another one of my loud psychedelic frocks and a bit of slap.
Plastering make-up on a flu bedraggled face is pretty daft I know but I was hoping that it would somehow magically make me look less dead....it didn't bleeding work :(
I also stuck a wiggy-woo on to keep my noggin warm & toasty.
At least the frock looks "fucking blinding" :)
Vintage 60s psychedelic print maxi dress, 70s  cropped suede jacket, 80s leather boots, 80s Kangol beret, wiggy-woo , gloves, pendant necklace  and bangles galore.
When we fed the birds the other day, I spotted a Canada goose that looked rather worse for wear.
It seemed to feed alright and it didn't look as if it was in distress but I still took some pics of it & contacted the RSPCA.
I've been a bit worried about the wee feathered fellow, so that's why we went back up to the park today with another baggy of delicious seed mix for the birdies...
Here's the poor wee thing, its wing is damaged and its rear end warps to one side...
I've read about a condition called 'Angel Wing' that is believed to be caused by a substandard diet, high in calories and low in nutrition.
There's actually a notice up by the pond telling people not to feed the birds stuff like white bread but unfortunately some people still do.
Here are two other birds that were hanging by the pond today...
A pretty mandarin duck and a  handsome grey heron
Right, I can't even focus on the screen anymore, so I guess that's my cue to go back to bed.
Have a superlative Sunday folks!

Cold hands, adventurous heart

I have no rose tinted tales from the nineties for you today only an outfit...
Vintage 70s suede jacket , 60s dress, 50s booties, 90s lurex jumper, M&S tights, knitted mohair hat, soapstone & macrame earrings, a plethora of bangly things (all thrifted from car boot sales and markets)
We went for a quick stroll around the park earlier and it was VERY cold.
I forgot to bring my gloves, so by the time we got to the park I had what I would describe as "hypothermic hands".
Last time I felt like my hands were going to break clean off was in February last year when I was kneeling on a training platform at the bottom of Wraysbury lake.
The water was three degrees Celsius and my life was flashing in front of my eyes.
Still one of the best experiences I had in 2012.
I'm absolutely hankering to go diving again...hurry up spring!
Hope you are all enjoying your weekend :)

Travelling through threads

I’ve had the black velour jumpsuit that I’m wearing today for over twenty years.
All throughout my teens my mum would let me order a few bits from the mail-order catalogue each season.
What would usually happen is that I would scope out the things that I fancied & then hang on until the sale to get more bang for my buck or kit for my krona as it were.
Invariably the things that I’d chosen ended up in the sale, perhaps cause I would usually favour the more impractical & ostentatious garments.
Whilst my mates took their fashion inspiration from Beverly Hills 90210, I sought my style stimulus in music videos; I wanted to look like the chicks on MTV, hell yeah!
The early 90s saw my wardrobe embrace a holy mishmash of clingy, second skin like leggings, jumpsuits & mini dresses, jewel tone long velvet waistcoats, ridiculously oversized jumpers in a kaleidoscope of colours and a rough and ready camouflage print bomber jacket.
I also bought my first ever pair of DMs and wore them to death.
My favourite shade of lipstick was called ‘Chocolate Kiss’ and my perfume was New West by Aramis.
I know that some people recoil in horror when faced with photos of their younger self, mainly because of the clothing they were sporting back then but I see these photos as little snapshots of a journey.
Personally I love seeing how someones style has evolved throughout the years and although my own long & winding road has been laced with a fair few fashion disasters,
all-in-all I'm pretty pleased with where its taken me.
How about you?
Vintage 80s snakeskin print jacket (eBay), 90s velour jumpsuit (Halens), 80s cowboy boots (car boot sale), beaded bib necklace (pressie) & DIYed earrings (made myself)
The words that you can see in the first pic are from a song by one of my all-time favourite bands 'The The'.
You can listen to it here, go on you know you want to ;)

From the seventies but still not going downhill

The awesome vintage ski jacket I was wearing today was bought for a tenner fifteen years ago in a Fort William charity shop.
At the time hubby was doing snowboard instructing at a ski center and I was trying really hard to find a job.
As we were quite skint we rented a microscopical room in a house owned by what we thought to be a widower.
Only after we'd moved in he told us that his wife had not long eloped to Spain with another man.
It was an odd experience to say the least, we'd hear him argue and plead with his wife on the phone in the middle of the night and whenever we went into the kitchen he'd corner us and talk incessantly about her.
He was also rather keen on wandering around in his underpants when he'd had a few too many swallies.
Our little nook comprised of a double bed that dwarfed the room and a chest of drawers with a black and white camping telly & a kettle perched on top of it, there was also a small built in wardrobe, that you couldn't open properly cause there wasn't enough space.
There were no jobs in Fort William so I spent a whole month holed up in that tiny room watching crap daytime TV and eating Pot Noodles.
In the end I had to leave my beloved to his snow covered hills and jump on a bus to London.
This jacket was bought with giro money on my last day in Fort William and I remember wearing it for the entire duration of the ten hour bus journey down south cause it was absolutely freezing.
I sat together with a bald, toothless weegie who had just been paroled & he was plying me with sickly sweet MD 20/20 and telling really crap jokes but he still had me in stitches.
I've had fifteen years of wear out of this jacket and it is still going strong.
70s ski jacket,  80s Wrangler cowboy boots, 90s velvet jumpsuit, wide mock-croc belt, knitted scarf & sequin beret.
I'm not the only one in this house who poses for pics by the way.
Here's Mark showing that anything I can do, he can do better...
Mark has been feeling a little bit blue this weekend cause the ski center that he used to instruct at is open for business with powder galore, I believe my man is pining for the hills.
To cheer ourselves up we revisited the pub that we went to last Sunday cause they were hosting a vintage jumble today.
I'm hoping to get a space here myself next time, fingers crossed.
The pub has got a really nice, laid-back vibe & the monthly vintage jumble was well stocked, cheap and cheerful, just how I like it.
Did I buy anything?
You will just have to wait and see ;)
Have a fab Sunday folks!

Burns Night

Tonight is Burns Night and as an adopted Scot I am celebrating it with gusto.
Veggie haggis, neeps and tatties for din-dins and even a small bottle of  malt to follow.
In honor the man I decided to wear a bit of tartan today...
Vintage 20s tux jacket, vintage 50s blouse top, vintage 80s Ralph Lauren tartan trousers, vintage 80s suede hiking boots (still dirty from when I helped mum do her kitchen up over a year ago, tut-tut) & a sequin beret (that looks a bit like a Jimmy hat when teamed with my hair) to add a bit of quirky glam to the proceedings.
When I bought these pants last November I couldn't do the zip up but now they fit like a glove, I love loosing inches without even trying.
Maybe I'm burning more calories trying to keep warm, eh?
It's frigging fridging here in London!
(pics sourced on Google images)
Scottish comedy at its best...
Have a great Friday night folks!

Jennie
