The soundtrack of my life

Back in the autumn of ‘92 something happened that would change my music taste forever.
Up until then I'd pretty much been a pop chart follower & my record collection played host to some of the most dire music ever made.
One afternoon I was on my way to a local café where a little cluster of my classmates used to hang out after school, when I spotted a new record store.
It looked really groovy from the outside and the scent of burning incense drew me in.
I wasn't going to buy anything but I left with two albums, which were
'Nirvana – Nevermind' & 'Pearl Jam –Ten'.
I wasn't even into that kind of music then but the owner of the shop was so convinced that I’d fall in love with them that he even told me that I could bring them back for a full refund if I didn't.
I brought them home & listened to them all weekend, then I went back into the shop on the following Monday & shook the dude’s hand.
After that pop was dead to me, I weeded out all the inane crap to make room for proper music.
I was an alternative rock convert, hallelujah ;)
The record store became a regular haunt for me and my mates.
The owner had an uncanny ability to unite people with music that they never thought they'd like; he also had a really infectious love of rock music & an almost encyclopedic knowledge of bands.
It was an exciting time of my life and one that deserved a more kick-ass soundtrack than the ten a penny pop I'd previously favoured and a kick-ass soundtrack is just what I got.
Later that year I bought the first album by 'Rage Against The Machine' and my life was never the same again ;)
The last record that I bought from the store, before I moved away from Sweden in ’93 was ‘The The – Dusk’ which is still one of my favourite albums.
I love all the songs on this album and I think they've kept fresh.
What 90s albums do you have that you can still listen to and enjoy all the way through?

I’ll leave you with another wonderful song by 'The The', enjoy…
Have a fabulous weekend!
Lot's of love,
Jennie

I love 90's grunge, all of it. Music got boring in the late 80's, then grunge happened. Thank you, Seattle!

Ahhhhh record stores...
'90 Depeche Mode's Violator-- still love it, among their other albums and Nine Inch Nails Pretty Hate machine-- they were late 80s, but I got to see them in concert at the first Lollapalooza in '91, along side Jane's Addiction and Ice T (with his legendary 'F the police' song :)

My passion for music started in 1980 when John Peel played Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart, I still remember the shiver I felt along my spine and losing the ability to concentrate on my history homework!
Afterwards came The Smiths, the Midlands Grebo scene, Madchester, Brit Pop and it still captivates me now, Zane Lowe played a track on Wednesday night so fabulous that I leapt out of the bath and investigated the band further on You Tube!
Whilst I liked Nevermind enough to buy it (at a ludicrously high price while travelling alone in Malta) I wouldn't say I was particularly passionate about the grunge scene, for me the 1990s was Garbage, Mansun and my beloved Jarvis' Pulp.

I love how music really is the soundtrack of our lives! I would have to say for me the two bands that blew my mind were Mötley Crüe and Metallica. I remember seeing the Crüe when I was 14 and thinking not only did they rock but holy shit they were frigging hot! Leather, makeup, bulges, fire! I was a metal head after that for sure.

How funny is that? We have a few things in common it seems :)
I remember one of the band tees I had back then was one from Rage Against the MAchine that had the phrase in the back 'killing people for sport will be legal by 1999'. My parents didn't like that one. LOL

I was more a child of the 70s- Zeppelin, Clapton etc. I pretty much listen to everything these days

Oh I completely fell in love with Matt Johnson's voice in 1985. So much emotion and just as well he was thousands of miles away at the time, he could probs quite easily have sang his way into me 17yo knickers;). Ooooooh norty!!! xxooxoxoxo
